The ‘Tejas Express’, India’s newest train, will make its first trip today i.e 22 May, 2017 from Mumbai to Goa. The luxury train is expected to complete the journey in less than nine hours, which makes it faster than the Janshatabdi. The train was revealed to the public in Mumbai on Sunday. The bright yellow superfast train promises a flight-like experience on the track at less than Rs 1,500 a ride. Its first commercial journey was flagged off by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu this afternoon. The much-awaited Tejas Express, boasts several modern facilities on-board like LED TV and tea, coffee vending machine, has been flagged off from Mumbai to Goa today.

The Tejas Express has German coaches fitted with LED screens, coffee vending machines and Wifi connectivity. The train will have thirteen coaches including one executive coach with a capacity of 56. All doors are centrally controlled. The train also has CCTV cameras, besides fire and smoke detection facilities. Its body is “graffiti proof”. The ticket fares will be cheaper than flights but 20 per cent higher than that of the Shatabdi Express.

The Tejas will take rail travel to a different level altogether. First of its kind, it will be a game changer. Each coach has cost Rs 3.25 crore, which have leather seats, LCD screens and a call button to summon attendants.  The train will run between Mumbai and Goa five days a week. During monsoon, it will run for three days. Tejas Express trains will also be launched between Delhi and Chandigarh and between Surat and Mumbai.

Here’s all you need to know about the luxurious train:

  1. Fully-loaded

The train has got all the ultra-modern amenities like on-board infotainment, wi-fi, CCTV, fire and smoke detection facilities, tea and coffee vending machine etc. General manager of central railway, who inspected the train at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai (CSTM), on Sunday, likened Tejas Express with an “aeroplane moving on the ground”.

  1. Speed

India’s first premium train will run at an average speed of 130kmph.

  1. Design

The train, manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, will have automatic entrance door, a first in non-suburban train in Indian railways. The graffiti proof, vinyl-wrapped specially designed exterior has a bright colour theme of orange and yellow. Tejas Express has a dust-proof/sealed inter car gangway. The express will also be pressed into service in Delhi-Chandigarh and Delhi-Lucknow sectors, according to the railways.

  1. Route and Schedule

The Tejas Express would operate between Mumbai and Karmali (Goa) five days a week during non-monsoon period and three days a week during monsoon by halting at Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Ratnagiri and Kudal stations.

  1. Capacity

The 20 coach train will have one executive AC chair car with 56 seating capacity and 12 AC chair cars with 78 seat capacity of each coach.

  1. Fare

Tejas Express’s executive class fare+ is Rs 2,940 (with food) and Rs 2,540 (without food), and for AC chair car the fare has been fixed at Rs 1,850 (with food) and Rs 1,220 (without food). Besides the railways has also planned optional on-board catering services.

  1. Safety

The high-speed train has all the safety measures like suppression system, fire suppression system, smoke detection and fire detection. A GPS-based passenger information display system and a digital destination board has also been installed for the convenience of the passengers.

  1. Braille assistance

Tejas Express has also got Braille assistance installed for visually challenged passengers.

  1. Cleanliness

The train has bio-vacuum toilets facility in all the coaches. It will also have other features like hand dryers, water level indicators and touch-less water taps.

  1. Response from public

According to central railway, passengers have shown positive response in booking advance trains for the train. The ticket booking started within minutes of its opening this morning and in the first four hours, 207 passengers booked tickets for the AC chair car and 10 for executive AC chair car.



No Service Charge On Train Tickets Booked Through IRCTC Website

The booking of railway tickets online through the IRCTC website has just become cheaper. In the Union Budget 2017 presented yesterday, finance minister Arun Jaitley said that railways will no longer levy service charge on train tickets booked online through the IRCTC website. Earlier, a service tax of Rs. 20 had to paid while booking Sleeper Class tickets and Rs. 40 for AC class tickets. But now the service charges on e-tickets booked through IRCTC will be withdrawn.

Indian Railways in collaboration with IRCTC launches Tiger Express with City of Lakes Udaipur. IRCTC has announce the departures of the new itinerary by a semi luxury train with dining car facility and AC road transportation. The Tiger Express, which was launched specifically for safaris in Madhya Pradesh (MP) in June 2016, is all set make Rajasthan its new home. Giving Bandhavgadh, Kanha tiger reserves in MP the slip, the train will begin its revised journey in the state of Rajasthan on November 19 by taking tourists to Ranthambhore for the tiger safari.

The Tiger Express is one of the most innovative tourism products launched by the Indian Railways and IRCTC. The train was launched on the World Environment Day earlier in June this year with the objective of spreading awareness about wildlife in general and the tiger in particular. The Railway minister had taken personal interest in conceptualizing this train with tiger motifs. Premium railway fares hiked up to 50 per cent

Get ready to pay more for Rajdhani, Shatabdi & Duronto train tickets from Sep 09.


The Railways have decided to introduce a flexi-fare system for premier trains – Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi from September 09, which means that passengers who book tickets when the train is full will have to pay more. The base fare for the high-speed and in-demand Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi trains will be on flexi-fare or surge pricing system. There are total 42 Rajdhani trains, 46 Shatabdi and 54 Duronto trains currently in service. However, there will be no change in the existing fare for 1AC and Executive Class of travel in premier trains. While 10 per cent of the seats will be sold in the normal fare in the beginning, it will go on increasing by 10 percent (1.1x) with every 10 per cent of berths sold with the ceiling limit at maximum 50 percent (1.5x) depending upon the demand. For 2AC and Chair Car, the maximum hike is 50 percent while for 3AC, it is 40 percent (1.4x).

In addition, vacant berths left at the time of charting would be offered for current booking. If a lower class seat costs more than a better coach under the flexi-fare system, passengers will be informed and allowed to upgrade. The maximum price for each ticket of a particular train will also be printed in the reservation chart to make it easier for people to upgrade by pay the difference amount. Other supplementary charges like reservation charges, super-fast charge, catering charges, service tax as applicable shall remain unchanged. The refund rules also remained unchanged. The ministry also confirmed that passengers who have already booked tickets at pre-revision rates will not have to pay more.

The new pricing policy will be implemented from 09 September, 2016.

IRCTC to operate a special semi-luxury train to Rajasthan during the Independence Day long weekend.


Rajasthan is a great place to be during the monsoons, and keeping the long weekend in mind, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has announced a special semi-luxury train tour that would take travelers from Delhi to the famous historical and religious places of Rajasthan, including Udaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar. Slated to operate from August 12 to August 16, the 4 night/5 day train journey will start from Delhi’s Safdarjung railway station and will cover interesting destinations like Mt Abu and Chittorgarh as well.

The three-day ultimate trial run for high-speed Talgo trains between Delhi and Mumbai route will start today.


The trial run for for high-speed ‘Talgo’ trains between the Delhi-Mumbai route will begin today i.e 01 August, 2016. The trial run for Talgo trains will be carried out on August 01, 03 and 05, 2016. Spanish-made Talgo has become the fastest train in the country by clocking a speed of 180 km/hr by covering 84 km in 38 minutes in a trial conducted by Railways on Mathura-Palwal route, surpassing the record of ‘Gatimaan Express’. Talgo aims to connect the national capital, New Delhi, with the financial capital, Mumbai.

The high-speed Talgo train is expected to cut travel time between Delhi and Mumbai to 12 hours. The super fast Rajdhani Express train takes around 16 hours to complete the 1,384 km stretch between New Delhi and Mumbai. The Rajdhani Express has an average running speed of nearly 91 kilometer per hour. It can further attain a top speed of 130 kilometers per hour. Talgo train has 9 coaches consisting of two Executive Class cars, four Chair Cars, a cafeteria, a power car and a tail-end coach for staff and equipment. In addition to the high-speed, Talgo trains are lighter than the existing trains with Indian Railways and it may also helps in saving power bills as it consumes only 30 per cent of energy.
